Squirrel Scouts are young people, aged 4 to 6, who grow and learn their own way through lots of different games and activities.

Every week, they gather in groups called Squirrel Dreys to learn by doing and get into the great outdoors – combined with early years best practice of storytelling, routine, and play. It’s a huge leap forward: our first new age range in 35 years. And it is a key part of our response to the challenges facing young people.

Being a Squirrel is all about growing and learning in small but mighty ways. Here are some of the things you’ll get up to with your new friends.

Exploring the great outdoors

Together, we might build a den, or go on a trip to the seaside, or host a Squirrel sleepover beneath the stars and more.

Try new skills and activities

The most important skills you’ll learn are the ones that will make you feel super strong standing on your own two feet.

Help others in the community

Whether it’s changing the whole world or helping a friend to try something new we always lend a hand.

Squirrels is open to all, and we usually tweak things to make sure everyone can join in the fun. If you have any questions about accessibility, chat with us as soon as possible. More information on specific adjustments can be found here.

Questions? We’ve answered some of the most common ones below.

How do I join the waiting list?

We’re working hard to ensure we can accommodate as many new Squirrels as possible. Please comple our joining form here and let us know you’re interest in your child joining Squirrels in Blackpool.

To help us get more Squirrel Dreys open, we need volunteers like you! Why not get stuck in? It’s good for you. Find out more here.

Why is there a new section?

Research from Ofsted tells us that the young people hardest hit by the pandemic are not developing the basic skills and learning they need. Early years children have returned less confident and more anxious after lockdowns.

Squirrels offers skills for life when and where it’s needed most. This is our opportunity to help enrich the lives of young people, preparing them for a brighter future.

We’re offering this brand new programme, with wellbeing, kindness and social action at its heart.

All you need to know about Squirrels here.

Is Squirrels open in Blackpool?

Yes they are! We’ve opened our Squirrel Dreys across the town. To express interest please fill in the form here.

If you are interested in volunteering with Squirrels or any other of our sections then please get in touch.

Badges and Uniform

Completing badges challenges you to do more, learn more and be more. See what’s on offer and start your journey to the top.

Squirrels volunteers

Volunteering’s not just about giving back – the benefits go both ways. All of our activities are run by amazing volunteers. Volunteering lets you try new things, meet new people, and make a difference.

It doesn’t matter if you want to get involved regularly or help out occasionally – we can find the right fit for you.

Moving to Beavers

Eventually, it’ll be time to say farewell to Squirrels and embrace your next big adventure.
